I’m a resident physician and I use DPC alongside my high-deductible health plan. Back in medical school, we rotate through primary care and a bunch of other specialties. While in primary care, we had a doctor come in who did a presentation on direct primary care. I honestly didn’t think too much of it until much later, when I got on a high-deductible plan, which really only covers emergencies.
I remember getting this huge bill back and asking myself, “What’s the point of all this?”
DPC is just easier. You don’t have to wait one or two months at a time just to get an appointment. As a surgeon, my schedule is not like an 8-to-5 job where I can take an hour off in the middle of the day to go to the doctor. I love that I can see my DPC doctor on a schedule that works for me. And of course, I love that I don’t ever have any surprise bills from insurance.
